Think your photos are great? Think you could win a competition or two? Be aware of the fine print before entering any Internet photo competitions… you might save yourself a lot of grief.
Search for “Photo Competition” on the Internet, and you’ll be greeted with lots of ads and websites that run photo competitions for amateurs.
Be aware that some of these are scams hoping to fleece amateur photographers out of cash.
Here’s what happens in these scams:
Of course you are honored that your photo has been selected (and on the cover, no less!) so shell out for a few copies of the book.
And this is the scam: Every single person who uploads their photos receives the ecstatic email and is printed in the book. Even if their photos are ordinary. So your photo is printed with lots of ordinary photos and not a ‘winner’ at all. For the ‘cover photo’ variations, they print a unique book for you and place your photo on a flimsy cover.
Other variations invite you to purchase a trophy or attend a photography conference (for even more money).
So you’ve paid a lot of money to receive something that is of questionable value.
Now technically, these sites do give you what they promise. However, be vary careful to not get sucked in when you hear that your photo is fantastic – they are just telling you what every amateur photographer wants to hear.
Ways to avoid these scams:
These sites fill a need for those who want to see their images in print. If you want to see your photo printed in a book, my recommendation is you do it yourself. Most of the online photo printing companies give you an option to print your photos as books.

A man I know has been told he has just won 1st. prize in a comp. connected to Sigma. The prize is for two people to go on a years assignment to 50 countries world wide taking photos all expenses paid etc.
The contact appears to be in Germany. He has not been asked for money in any way yet. The trip is to start in October in the USA and then go to S.America and so on.
The costs and arrangments for such a trip are mind boggling and I wonder if there are 50 countries that you could get into as well as safely out again.
Has anyone heard of this competition? I would value your comments.

Member of both Better Photo and of Digital Image Cafe. The former does not award prizes, and the winners are often “regulars” – mainly, because those people are outstanding photographers. Rarely, does a substandard photo win. Good place to view all entries and learn what works and what doesn’t (comparing similar images is a great learning tool.) Lots of advertising for courses, but not necessary to take. $49/year.
The latter has a great critique corner and wonderful prizes for Photo of the Month (8 categories) and Photo of the Year (8 cats, also.) Like the other site, many of the same photographers win consistently, but so do new members. Basically, blind judging by volunteer panel; Monthly (from all the POTDs) is judged by an outside Pro.$30/year.
Cream rises to the top, period. Unless, it’s a popularity vote site – even with ‘blind’ entries, members start recognizing styles and will vote for friends.
If you’re only looking for big money/prizes, go ahead and enter contests (from Nat.Geo, Outdoor Photog, etc.) You’ll really learn what makes a great photograph; and your chance of winning is minute.
This site http://www.boulevardofphotographers.com is a scam. I entered my photo in it and a few weeks later they said I had been chosen by a select reviewer to enter this book. The book is 69.00 plus shipping then you can pay even more if you want a plaque with your name, photo, and the contest. Its best of 2010 photography. I got so excited felt special. Then I started thinking…shouldnt they be paying me????? I sent them an email asking this. I didnt tell them its okay to publish it. I am going to reply to them say it isnt okay and take myself off the mailing list. Do not fall for this scam either. Thankyou for this site for giving me a heads up on photographers. It sounded just like this scam.

Me too, they wanted me to pay for air fare and accomodations to attend the award ceremony too, glad I didn’t fall for it!
I don’t consider Photographer’s Forum a scam–around half of the entries are finalists with only a hundred or so that go on to actually be considered honorable mentions or higher. The finalists do get printed in the book and the book is a nice one–hard cover–you do need to pay for it–they do not pressure you into buying the book. They also award a very nice 5×7 certificate to each finalist. Considering the top prizes are sponsored by Canon, Nikon or Sigma–I don’t think these companies would be sponsors if this were a scam.
I have entered the past two years and have been a finalist and yes, I have purchased the book–but with my own free will. I hope this helps.
I sent my photo to the Serbin Communication (Photographer’s FORUM) 2010 Annual Spring Photo competition. Today I received a letter stating that my photo has been chosen as Finalist and will printed on their Best of Photography 2010 book. But in order to get the book, I must pay USD 55. Is this a scam? Appreciate your reply and advice. Thank you.
I didn’t get an email saying that I won but I got one saying my photo will be published. Don’t know if the contest is real or not.
Also Boulevard of photographers,Photo Laureates says that you retain and keep the rights to your photos and the book says “No part of this publication may be reproduced,stored in a retrieval system,or transmitted in any form or by any means,electronic,mechanical,photocopy,otherwise without the permission of the publisher. All photographs contained herein are under copyrights of their respective authors.
I got my book in the mail today from Photo Laureates and wwwBoulevardofphotographers.com I paid $79. It’s a beautiful book but it’s not worth $79. The contest may or may not be real. Well,if I really got ripped off,I’m glad they only go $79 from me. My creditcard statement says it’s from Great Britain but the book was shipped from Indiana. Thrasher4
Ha. This scam was done to me a couple years ago, but thank God I was cheap and didn’t fall for it. They said my photograph was among the best they had ever seen, and I was offered some award and ceremony in like Las Vegas, and, of course, had to pay loads of cash. I never did it ‘cuz I knew my photo was not that good. lol
I allso entered this contest and went round and round with them after paying for my book. This was a few years ago. I finally contacted the attorney Generals office of VA I think it was and finally the refunded my money plus they sent me a book.

If you are an amateur photographer with stunning pictures and want to compete for a cash price, I will recommend you to go to Photographer’s Forum – Serbin Communications (www.pfmagazine.com) or (www.serbin.com). I did not win any of the prices but I received what they offered for the finalist. My picture which was only one, was published in the Best Of Photography 2008 book. I have the book and a Finalist Certificate with my name on. The book is a big book with many color, and black and white pictures of all the winners and finalists (275 pages). I am planing to enter in to the 2010 competition because I believe that I have improved much more since. Go and visit the website!

If you are an amateur of professional photographer with stunning pictures, do not go to betterphoto.com. They advertise as a fair photo contest website but they are not. They will use your picture to attract traffic to their website and you will never see any prize. Judge it yourself, the winners and finalist are always the same and those are people who invested in their courses or work for them. This is not a fair contest, pictures are not judged according with their photographic merit. Your pictures and your name will be used as a fillers only. Do not let them fool you.
Well, as I posted on another site, I was taken in by the scam at PhotoLaurete.com I ordered the book and the plaque. I received the plaque and it wasn’t all that bad, however, the book just came in the mail this week, many, many months later and the page my photo is on is at the beginning, the pages are obviously glued into the front of the book. There is no publishing date at the beginning and the whole thing is just so upsetting. When you become interested in photography and you get some great shots your friends and family tell you you have an “eye’ for this. You get excited and start to buy better equipment and then you go on line and look for contests. This whole experience has me heartbroken. I won’t go away quietly and I urge anyone who has had this experience to report it to the attorney general in their state. This has to be stopped.
I am going to turn them in as all of you should do. It is against the law to take your money and not give you something for it. Hey I have a bridge for sale. How about you all chip in a $100.00
I too just got my email that i am among the finalist. Ur picture will be in our book… But before i gave money away it was an offer to go to be true so i checked it out and came across several websites that should scams and ppl like others that have been taken. the website i posted on was photolaureates.org. When i pulled up the order form i found this listed on the bottom of the screen:
100% Satisfaction guarantee, Management will refund you if you are not happy with your order. help@photolaureates.org I dont know if this will help some but maybe it will help another victim from getting scam’d. Thankss everyone for posting bcause that gives others a chance to keep their money and Im truely sorry for the ones that have. I hope u can get ur money back and we can shut these ppl down for good!!

I am one of thopse people, I enter my work online for contest and reseved a notice that I had won and for a
fee I can buy a book with my work and that of others, I thought that was cool so my husband bought two of them for $115.00
last summer. they said that becouse they were still sreechin for others to be in this book it would be sent 1-4-09.
so I sent them an e-mail yesterday askin when it would be mailed and have not reseved any news.
If you go to BBB and look them up you will see that their facks but theres others.
I have called the Attorney generals office in CA about filing a report maybe if enough people do this
action will be takin. If you wish to help start a law suit please call 1-916-322-3360 and ask them to mail you the papers.
It’s a start to justice for some of us. I’m goin to try to get something out of this, I maybe out a book but Atleast I’ll sleep

I was so close to getting caught by one of these. A real big one; “picture.com” I sent in a photo when I had just gotten into photography. I have to admit I found it suspicious that they failed to mention an age limit and would let a 12 year old enter. Of course I hoped I’d be allowed to enter, but they said absolutely nothing! Anyway, so I got a letter “your photo rules!” and what not and I got so excited! Then I called my father to tell him I was going to be “published” and him being the genius lawyer that he is told me to check if it was a scam. Lo and behold; it was.
Just as a warning these guys, “picture.com”, have many variations of this scam. There’s “poetry.com” and I’m sure they have others. My other friend who writes wonderful poetry got jacked with that and I told that it was a scam and she wouldn’t believe me! Moral of the story is; Don’t let flattery get the better of you.
I got the photlaureates and did not buy the book. They send me new attempts every so often, I guess I need to block them. May their film corrode and their digital cameras have dust.
The real problem is how to post pics to legitimate sites withot them being stolen by whomever is sleazy enough to do so. There was a photographer on Flickr that had a lot of work stolen by a Britsh poster company that made lotsa money from her hard work and there was no legal recourse. I am now reluctant to uplaod anything to anyone. Pretty sad place the internet these days,. One scam after another.
There is a new one in town called Scmap.com that wants you to give your permission to use your photo’s on their website. They feed off of Flickr phots’s. Seems to me if they are making money off of our pics they should share the wealth.. I also wonder why links to these phony contests are still showing up on legitimate sites. Seems like if everyone knows they are a ripoff their links should be removed. Don’t make sense to me, if your not part of the solution ya must be part of the problem ??
We sent one picture in to check out this site and immediately started getting the scam emails saying “we won”. Make them work to try to sell you the book or award. Reply back to their emails stating that you need more information and comfirmation of the award. Flood their incoming email with bogus requests for further information acting like you are interested. Ask them what page of the book your image will be on so your friends and family can find it when they order their copy. When they have to reply to all these potential sales and not getting any, maybe they’ll get the hint.
Basically Picture.com is a very slick sales operation. It is not a scam as such but it’s methods are less than openly honest. They will publish anyone who is prepared to buy their book. The quality or merits of the photos are irrellevant. Even in a genuine photo contest, 80% of the submissions will be complete rubbish. Picture.com cream a few of the 20% good photos that give them credibility. Although I haven’t been to one of their seminars, judging from what is written here, they do deliver, although if you have got there by way of little more than a family snap, I doubt if you would benefit from your expense.
Their crime, if any, is running photo competitions as a business, but there is no law against that, and in my experience I did receive the goods I paid for even though I live outside the USA.
