Think your photos are great? Think you could win a competition or two? Be aware of the fine print before entering any Internet photo competitions… you might save yourself a lot of grief.
Search for “Photo Competition” on the Internet, and you’ll be greeted with lots of ads and websites that run photo competitions for amateurs.
Be aware that some of these are scams hoping to fleece amateur photographers out of cash.
Here’s what happens in these scams:
Of course you are honored that your photo has been selected (and on the cover, no less!) so shell out for a few copies of the book.
And this is the scam: Every single person who uploads their photos receives the ecstatic email and is printed in the book. Even if their photos are ordinary. So your photo is printed with lots of ordinary photos and not a ‘winner’ at all. For the ‘cover photo’ variations, they print a unique book for you and place your photo on a flimsy cover.
Other variations invite you to purchase a trophy or attend a photography conference (for even more money).
So you’ve paid a lot of money to receive something that is of questionable value.
Now technically, these sites do give you what they promise. However, be vary careful to not get sucked in when you hear that your photo is fantastic - they are just telling you what every amateur photographer wants to hear.
Ways to avoid these scams:
These sites fill a need for those who want to see their images in print. If you want to see your photo printed in a book, my recommendation is you do it yourself. Most of the online photo printing companies give you an option to print your photos as books.
Have you had a bad experience with one of these sites? What about a good experience with a competition? Share it below.

1After reading your article on being scammed by promising “my” picture in their book and unfortunately I was one t buy into their great raves of my work. I was sent at first a great “atagirl” with naming me as one among the Photo Winners of the circle…I was delighted and took line hook and the sinker…I have yet to receive any such book and I paid close to $100.00 …..it has been close to 10-12 months now and well…..I am out $100 buck and no book. I appreciate you warning the public of such things…I just regret that I found it 10-12 months to late.

2I also entered a contest. It was the one that is listed above. I received a hardbound book with the ugliest pictures in it. Most of the pictures looked like they were taken by a monkey. They were beyond ordinary. I was so angry. The website was “picture.com”. With the possibility of winning $10.000.000 was quite tempting. But i have now learned my lesson.

3I too eneterd in the contest picture.com and guess what, the three pictures I entered were chosen to be printed, that told me there was something wrong here, I never purchased any of their books I figure if my pictures were good enough to be published they should be paying me, not me paying them.

4I also entered the contest on picture.com and was told that i had won. I was offered the book but I was not so sure about paying for it. I also believed they should be paying me, not the other way around. I ran this past my photography teacher and of course was advised that this was a scam… glad I didn’t fall for it.

5Well, what do you know, I had a strange feeling about this picture.com site, but bought into it for grins, I also purchased a metak award of some sort, and I too have yet to receive anything from them.

8I have also entered the picture.com competition, strangely enough I too was told my picture was great and was through to the next round where I could win the $10,000. Oh, and would I like to buy the book? I haven’t paid anything to them, figured it may be a scam. Thank god for that - the NZ $ would have made it much more than $100 for me!

9I too entered the picture.com photography contest. Those repeated emails about how exceptional my photo was and how I should buy the book or get it printed on canvas were so excessive, I ended up adding them to my spam list. However, they did ask for my permission when saying they were printing the picture in the book, and they did send me a little medallion for ‘1st place’ or something (behind the super brilliant and brilliant places). This all cost me nothing, but it would have been easy to get sucked in.
If you want your own photo book, I’ve had one printed through shutterfly.com. Turned out great!

14Fortunately, I held back on the picture.com site when I was told I had my picture published BUT I wasn’t so smart when I got the first email from the http://www.photolaureates.org site telling me I had also been published by them. They had allowed me to pay 1/2 at a time for their book so I jumped at that, STUPID! I know should have been smarter than that! So please keep an eye out for that site as well!!!

15I also put a picture n the picture.com site, and like all the other’s they said that I had won. 1st they offered me to buy the book that it was being put in for almost 100.00. 2nd was to buy a canvas of your photo. And now the 3rd is going to some thing in Vagas at a hotel. Saying that I had won and that they wanted me to be there when my name was called.
Thank god I never did any of them. I am a stay at home mother and we live off one income, so we couldnt get it anyways. The only thing is , is that I was going to have my mother buy the book for the both of us. She wanted one too. But for some reason I never took the order form to her.
Well now I know from all of you about this site, thank you very much for people like you. Or I would of been sucked in.

17Wow, I can’t believe what I’m reading. That stupid picture.com was a farse!?! I never bought their book, just sent in the photo. I wish there was a way to bust them, good thing I found this site.
Sorry to all of those who sent picture.com money, I hope you win awards elsewhere in real competitions.

18Yes I admit I was taken in at http://www.picture.com. I paid for the book but I could not afford to go to LasVegas for the whooplah event. I finally called them about the book as it was supposed to be published in March. I called somewhere in the ballpark of May I think. The person told me that there had been a delay in the publishing date so it would not come out for another 4 weeks. This is the funny part I went to the mailbox after talking to this individual and the book was in the mail lol. I guess that company is so messed up that the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. I do not know what the site url is sorry.

19Another of such fake sites is http://www.circleofphotographers.com but I think they were burst or something. I sent them $34 for a book with my picture but got nothing. Whenever I would inquire they would tell me how publishing had been postponed to about 4 months ahead!

20Yes, I have several photos on picture.com. I have never purchased a book as it became obvious after the first couple entries that I would always be considered a magnificent photographer. I wonder how much money they are making selling these great images for advertising, compliments of you and I.

21I sent a photo in to picture.com and before a day had gone by, I recieved an e-mail stating that mine was one of the top ten of all the photos submitted. It was a picture of my coffee cup for cripes sake! Well needless to say, my husband saw my e-mail, so he sent in a picture of a strawberry that he had taken. Low and behold…he is in the top ten also! Of course we were both given the wonderful opportunity to buy the “book” and/or get our picture transferred to canvas. Well, no way. We knew with all the many thousands if not millions of photos submitted, we, amatures could not be in the top ten of the world. Now we and all my friends and family are wearing out the Delete button on our computors.

22In defence of picture .com I must tell you, I have been submitting photos to them for a couple of years, they have published some of my work with my permission and some I haven’t given permission. I was skeptical of them also until I understood how the competition worked and attended one of their seminars. I met Bob Grouin, John Lennons personal photographer and learned a lot from him. I met Steve McCurry from National Geographic Magazine and learned a lot from him. I met David Allio and was taught a digital photography course by him. I met Bob Nickerson from Time magazine. I have also had my photos reach a certain level in the competition and I have won trophys and medallions and editor’s choice awards and still never won the big prize, but it just made me strive harder as I have seen with my own eyes an ordinary housewife with three kids that took a great photo and won $10,000.00 and someone I had befriended at the symposium won money to pay for his next trip to the symposium. The judging is tough but very fair and is done by photographers who are brought in by the International Society of Photographers and are highly qualified. This I have seen with my own eyes and experienced. If you don’t like a photo that’s okay but maybe someone else does. Photography is an art in it’s own right and is the same as painting some you like and some you don’t. If you haven’t won anything, understand you are competing with photographers from all over the world and I’ve seen the work and some doesn’t impress me and some is quite extroadinary. That in itself is quite a lesson. Picture.Com allows you to get your art out there and they don’t force you to purchase anything that’s entirely your decision and they do send whatever you decide to purchase. I agree that you shouldn’t have to pay for your awards but it does cost to ship and they must ship all over the world and those are part of the rules.
No one forces you to buy anything.

25I was caught by http://www.photolaureates.org too. They offered a prize of something like $50k. I submitted it just to try out, and they emailed back the your-photo-is-great -please-pay-$xxx letter. Thankfully I had read about poetry.com and recognised the scam signs; I emailed them back immediately demanding that they remove my photo. They replied making it seem as though I was the most unreasonable person in the world to not want to help them pay for publishing costs.

27Photo.com is not really a scam in the fullest sense of the word. A better term would be “Tourist trap” they don’t do anything illegal, annoying maybe, but not illegal. I too was given a great feeling of accomplishment and was told that I was a great photographer. I didn’t buy the book, but felt like others may benefit from seeing my photographs. I just shot it in 5 seconds and so I didn’t feel like I had done anything worth any money. If I had spent hours framing and composing a shot, then maybe I would have been more lkely to not allow them to use it. Bottom line is if you didn’t get what you paid for contact the FTC or let them know that you are gonig to do so and they might put a fire under the publishing company to get the book to you. If you were offered to go to Las Vegas as I was, great, I too didn’t go because of cost reasons. I figured if I won the $10K then they could send it to me in the mail. I also didn’t buy any awards that they were offering - albeit they were very nice crystal trophies. I just felt like I hadn’t really earned the award. I did however feel that the vote of confidence in my ability to take a snap shot could be worked on and improved. So I am now working on creating better photos. On the note of a book. If you really want to do a photo book, or any type of book, check out lulu.com! It is a self publishing company and you can even sell your books on their site. Good luck on any competition, but like someone before wrote, you are one in a million to win.

28I too have had the letter saying how great my photo was and its going to be published in a book. I didnt fall for this as I have already been suckered with the poetry competition. International photography . com. (or poetry) same looking letter just the name change. Still has the trophys, medalians, confrences, and you photo will have its own page to itself. Oh yes, and for a small price extra you can add something about yourself too.

30I too submitted a photo, and it is a great photo, to PICTURE.COM. Got the gushing complimentary letter that boosted my ego. However, I listened to that little voice that told me to do some research before I give them permission to use it or send a check for their Fall issue of Endless Journeys. I have found a couple of sites indicating this is a scam. Thank you for pointing out these scammers. GOOD JOB!! Sorry, I don’t know the URL.

31I also entered the picture.com competition. I had been becoming suspicious since they accepted every picture I sent in and they kept on asking me to submit more. Also I found no way to contact them by email and they still have not published the book that was supposed to be published last September. I am glad I didn’t buy the book since I thought $90 was too much for a big book containing a few of my pictures. I don’t even want to know what they are actually doing with these thousands of photos.

32I also entered the Picture.com competition and got the ego-boosting letter in e-mail form yesterday. Luckily, I found out it was a scam on Google before paying for the book. THANK YOU! I’ve unsubscribed from their mailing list and sent an e-mail requesting that they remove my photograph from their website IMMEDIATELY. However, I highly doubt this request will be heard. Does anyone know how to effectively have their photograph removed from this website?

34I attended the conference in Vegas in March for the International Society of Photographers. We met many proffesionals of photography, A commedian and the singing group the Platters. We had seminars all day for three days in which we could choose the class and time. I witnessed the check being handed to the man with the winning photograph, along with many other cash prizes and gifts. We won a 120.00 dinner at a nice restaurant. These contests can’t offer 10,000$ without any income. Or pay all the top photographers to fly in and accomodate their room and meals. They have to get the $ some how. I’m not saying they haven’t scammed people, but what I seen was proffesionally done. I also recieved a beautiful glass trophy and ribbon.

38I have entered photos at picture.com too and I got a great award. It cost me some money and I got invited to the annual convention for International Society of Photographers with $100 off coupon. The award I got is a large siver cup with nice inscription on it. I get a lot of compliments on it. I haven’t been to the convention but thinking of going next spring cause its in Vegas and I love that place anyway. So I guess everyone isn’t scammed although I do agree with a lot of comments here.

39Picture.com tried to get me. They took a thumbnail off a stock photography site I had posted pictures on, printed it on a piece of paper and sent it to me telling me how great it was and trying to get me to buy the book they would put it in, etc., etc, etc. They must have quit that practice, since no one has mentioned it. They tried over and over. This was several years ago.
Keep spreading the word about them.

42I also placed a photo with picture.com, forgot about it until I recieved an email saying “Craig Foster and I have been discussing your photo, “Message of the Clouds,” and we are pleased to inform you that you have been nominated to join the International Society of Photographers Hall of Fame. This is a prestigious group of worldwide photographers. They all have one thing in common: Their love and passion for photography and their photographic talent. Your submission caught our eye because it displays your creative skills and dedication to your art. You are the perfect candidate to be included in the 2008 Class of the International Society of Photographers Hall of Fame” I was so excited I copied the email and printed it out, my friend took it and laminated it. I was not offered my photo to be in a book but I could pay for it to be painted on canvas, I was also offered a discount to their seminar

44I not entered any of these type of competitions but have entered those on Fotki.com - not prestigious - just interesting and you are, of course, judged by your peers. No prizes - just comments.
I see that the advert for Picture.com is still on this page- is there no way of removing this?

45I actually paid money to Photolaureates. This is definitely a scam. For the information of other scamees this is what I did about it. After several attempts to contact them and receiving automated replies, I threatened to report them to the Fair Trading Authority in my country (Australia) and guess what…………the money was credited in full to my bank account within days. Maybe I was just lucy but it pays to try.

46Sad really. I haven’t bought any ‘books’ luckily and will add further emails to my scam/spam list. Another thing I have learned to look for is ability to MANAGER YOUR PHOTOS!!! If you can’t remove your photo or even edit it once it is up there, then it smells a little rotten.

47Have a picture in picture.com… I didn’t fall for the book nor the medal. In my opinion, If I won something, why the heck will I have to buy it? Now, I’m trying to figure out how to delete my picture on the site… I was able to block them from sending me more emails, but want my picture off the site a.s.a.p. Anyone know how?

48Well,
I submitted a picture to picture.com and forgot I had even done it. I just started getting e-mails about how fantastic it was and how I had won the Editor’s Choice Award so I COULD BUY the medallion and watch.
If I won, why should I BUY it? I also got the Las Vegas Invite….I don’t do anything or buy anything without researching it first, and this started sounding real fishy. I’m so glad I followed my instincts. I wish I could get my picture off the website. Thanks for the warning.

49I entered the “PICTURE.COM” free photo contest and was first turned down but my second entry was placed in the editors choice award and I was told that I could become an ISP (International Society of Photographers) club and that I was awarded their Editor’s Choice Award plaque…for only $89.00 I could have the plaque and the membership. I bought into the scam and must admit I should have listened to my gut feelings about this. I take photographs that my family says would make wonderful postcards and I just had to enter to see what someone else had as a critique. I called picture.com several times and was put on hold for over eight minutes.

50Picture.com told me thesame about my picture, that it had won, i did purchase the book; however, a few months later i realized i should have done some research, so I did. Most people say it’s a scam. I didn’t know how to contact them, i don’t remember if I did. I did call my credit card company and told them that i had not received what i purchased, so they did what’s called a “chargeback”. If they don’t respond to the bank as to why they have not sent the items you get your money back. So they did not respond and I got my money back. CALL YOUR CREDIT CARD COMPNAY, THEY WILL HELP YOU GET YOUR MONEY BACK!

51Basically Picture.com is a very slick sales operation. It is not a scam as such but it’s methods are less than openly honest. They will publish anyone who is prepared to buy their book. The quality or merits of the photos are irrellevant. Even in a genuine photo contest, 80% of the submissions will be complete rubbish. Picture.com cream a few of the 20% good photos that give them credibility. Although I haven’t been to one of their seminars, judging from what is written here, they do deliver, although if you have got there by way of little more than a family snap, I doubt if you would benefit from your expense.
Their crime, if any, is running photo competitions as a business, but there is no law against that, and in my experience I did receive the goods I paid for even though I live outside the USA.

52We sent one picture in to check out this site and immediately started getting the scam emails saying “we won”. Make them work to try to sell you the book or award. Reply back to their emails stating that you need more information and comfirmation of the award. Flood their incoming email with bogus requests for further information acting like you are interested. Ask them what page of the book your image will be on so your friends and family can find it when they order their copy. When they have to reply to all these potential sales and not getting any, maybe they’ll get the hint.
Tired of scams

53There is a new one in town called Scmap.com that wants you to give your permission to use your photo’s on their website. They feed off of Flickr phots’s. Seems to me if they are making money off of our pics they should share the wealth.. I also wonder why links to these phony contests are still showing up on legitimate sites. Seems like if everyone knows they are a ripoff their links should be removed. Don’t make sense to me, if your not part of the solution ya must be part of the problem ??
Tired of scams
September 7th, 2008 at 7:15 am
54I got the photlaureates and did not buy the book. They send me new attempts every so often, I guess I need to block them. May their film corrode and their digital cameras have dust.
The real problem is how to post pics to legitimate sites withot them being stolen by whomever is sleazy enough to do so. There was a photographer on Flickr that had a lot of work stolen by a Britsh poster company that made lotsa money from her hard work and there was no legal recourse. I am now reluctant to uplaod anything to anyone. Pretty sad place the internet these days,. One scam after another.
