This past week saw the first birthday of my Digital Photo Forum.
I set the forum up to be a free place for like minded photographers (both professionals and hobbyists) to discuss photography related issues. I added a photo gallery so that photos could be shared as well as comments.
The forum and gallery was announced on the 8th September, 2005, and at the end of our first year, I thought it would be fitting to do a ‘year that was’.
In the past year, over 4,700 members have registered for the forum and created over 9,000 posts. The image gallery has a whopping 38,000 images (over 16Gb disk space) with about 100 new images being added every DAY! (You can see the latest images here)
Images can be commented on, and in the last 12 months, we’ve had over 130,000 comments!
The forum consistently receives about 10,000 page views from about 1,000 visitors per day.
We’ve had some great moments, with a number of forum members entering their images in competitions - and winning!
The forum hasn’t been without it’s trials and tribulations. We had a very lively discussion recently when I announced some new rules about explicit photos on the forum. I added this rule to promote a family friendly site, but I know I ruffled a few feathers.
When I first started the forum, I had no idea how successful it would be. Thankfully - due mainly to the very generous contributors of the members over the past year - I think I can say that the forum is a big success.
If you want a free place to hang out, discuss photography with others, and show off your pictures, I suggest you take a look, register and start contributing and uploading! I can’t tell you how many comments I’ve had from members who have been really pleased by the comments others have made on their images.
Finally, I thought it was worth singling out a number of members who have helped make the forum what it is. These members signed up in the first few days, and are still active now. Their photos and photographic advice has been excellent, and I thank you all very much.

1Congratulations David and DPF!
Amongst the numerous other photographic sites on the net, the Digital Photo Forum stands out like a shining beacon.
For me, only part of its value has been finding a place to show my pictures. The main value has been in meeting other photographers, both on the site and in person, and becoming part of an international family of fellow artists.
For any photographer or artist, living in isolation can be a very lonely existence. Becoming part of a community of artists - which is what we all are, make no mistake -
is very rewarding. To gain some recognition of one’s work in one’s lifetime is a positive and uplifting experience.
In the time I’ve been on the DPF, I’ve seen a great deal of improvement in my own work, and have followed the progress of others. Watching as first tentative steps became giant strides. We all have a great deal to learn from each other, and the DPF gives us the ideal medium to do so.
Electronic friendships have been formed with like-minded people from all over the world. These are no less real and valuable than any made in the flesh, and for me have proven to be very rewarding in the exchange of ideas. There are no barriers of countries or cultures or age or experience. The only limitation is the number of hours in a day that one can devote to posting pictures and making comments in the galleries of others.
So, Happy Birthday to Digital Photo Forum and long may it continue to grow and thrive!

3Hello David and to all on the forum!. I certainly “did” realize it WAS our birthday, and had intentions of posting a “happy birthday” picture of “some kind”….to all of its’ participants. But like some good intentions, it was undone. But, I did remember!! And I also remember and still have some of my “older” photos and if you could see the difference NOW….I guess you would either “laugh”….or be amazed at the difference. Not that I am perfect my “any means”……just that I too have learned so much. Also, I think the forum gives us ideas from other people who are willing to share them with us, and just from “looking” at their work. Also, there is the thing of “competition”……which drives us to “be better”…! Do better! Learn more! So, to you and all who participate in a special way on the forum, to all my friends who I have made on the forum, I say, “THANK YOU”….for all your help, and thank you for your support and kindness and for some of the fun things that we have been through also…..I thank you!. David, I pray for your full recovery, and my blessings to you and your family. And many thanks to you for giving us this opportunity…… And as I read what George said, he took the thoughts right out of my head……and put them down just as I would have expressed. In ending…..God bless you all…….Elaine

4Hi David,
I wish a very happy birthday to DPF, long may it continue to grow and thrive.
Apart the possibility to show our pictures and to learn continuously to improve them, the main value of this forum is in meeting other photographers and becoming part of an international family, and the possibility to create virtual friendships, which is a very positive and rewarding experience. For all this, I’m really grateful to DPF.
So thank you a lot for all this - and once again happy birthday.
Best wishes from Switzerland.

14I would like to be part of the line of well-wishers to David and the Forum. I count it a privilege to be part of the 1st year birthing of this forum. Being on this site has brought to me learning, growth, satisfaction, stimulation, friendship, inspiration and barrels of raucous laughter and a wonderfully condensed study of human nature, all of which I considered a pretty rounded enrichment.
