How to Photograph Dessert

Food photography as a general category can be extraordinarily challenging. Even under the best conditions, it can be complicated to make food look appetizing. The colors need to be right, the background needs to be perfect, and the composition and depth of field need to be spot on. If anything, it’s even more difficult to photograph desserts well. Desserts often feature messy sauces and garnishes, cold elements that are subject to rapid melting, and it all has to be photographed quickly and in such a way that it looks tantalizingly irresistible. How to photograph cooking

Confession: I love cooking shows. I love cooking blogs, too. And it’s not just because I hope to one day be able to re-create all those recipes for my own family table, it’s also because I just think there is something magical about the process of taking raw ingredients and transforming them into something delicious. And there’s something even more wonderful about beautiful photos that chronicle the process.

The very best food blogs have this down to a science. They know exactly how to light and shoot the process of preparing a recipe in order to make it as enticing as possible to an audience. You can do the same thing, too, and you don’t even need a food blog. Here’s how.

We all love to eat it, but there are also plenty of photographers who make a decent career in food photography.

If you’re not a professional food photographer, those blueberry pancakes can look great in photos or they can look tired and dishevelled. A lot of thought and preparation goes into the food photographs you see in cookbooks, print ads, posters, or menus. Like any other photography niche, it’s a speciality with its own art. I’ve compiled some thoughts for you to consider when photographing your favorite dishes and if you’re thinking of making this a career.

Food that Looks Good Enough to Eat

You’ve probably heard the phrase “we eat with our eyes first.” That’s particularly true with food photography, when the goal is to take photographs that sell–literally or figuratively–a food or recipe to a hungry viewer.

Taking good food photos can be especially tricky because perhaps more than any other subject, food images suffer when the lighting is poor and the composition is careless. Any other subject might look OK when those elements aren’t quite perfect, but the difference between perfect light and less than perfect light can mean the difference between food that looks delicious and food that looks downright unappetizing. So how can you make sure that your food images will make your viewers hungry rather than encouraging them to stick to their diets? Let’s find out.
