Lighting Secrets
Almost as important as composition is the use of light. Here are some secrets for using light.
The best outdoors light to be found is at dawn and dusk. Here the light is not as bright as midday, and the sun produces some wonderful reds. Both these help to make a normally ordinary shot look magic by creating a warm glow. When you are shooting outdoors, the best way to shoot is away from the sun. Don’t have the sun in your photographs because it will overpower the colors and ensure the side of your subject facing the camera is in shadow. Ensure the sun is behind your back. Another thing to watch out for is that your subject doesn’t squint. We all love to see bright wide eyes, so ensure the sun isn’t too bright. This is another reason to shoot at dawn or dusk - you can have the subject facing the sun but not squinting… and you get much better colors in your image at the same time! If shooting in sunlight, watch for shadows. Look at the shadow cast by your subject and ensure it doesn’t block anything, or look unsightly. Additionally, ensure your own shadow doesn’t fall into the picture! The best night shots are taken just after sunset. This is where scenes are lit up as if it were night, but there is still a tiny bit of sunlight around to help light the scene and bring out the detail. When indoors, try moving your lighting sources around. Lights at lower angles are usually more dramatic than plain overhead lighting. Remember the secret about using your flash during the day? It’s also possible on most digital cameras to take night shots without a flash. Try setting your ISO speed to 800 or above to ensure the camera is sensitive to very low light. Need to use the flash, but it’s a bit harsh? Try taping some wax paper over the flash to diffuse the light. Want to light a very small object? If you’re using your macro setting to take a shot, cut up a plastic milk container and place it around the object. It will diffuse the surrounding light.

Hi David, I am a mature student doing a BA (Hons) Fine Art Degree and have just started my third and final year. I did a photography module in my second year (only because I had to) and was horrified at all the ’stuff’ one needed to know to use a camera properly and take reasonable photos. Then along came your hints and tips. Put into laymans terms they made it all so much more understandable. I am now not so terrified of the ‘little black box’. In fact I have even sold some of my work and am specialising in photography for my final year. What can I say other than many, many thanks. Cheers……….I owe you…….Wendy. UK

November 18, 2006 @ 8:10 pm
Thank you for the tips.
The title of your tips is: “Digital Photo Secrets” and, if I remember correctly, you even mentioned the Canon Powershot S3 IS somewhere. Now, I think that all your tips are of value, but only a few are applicable to digital photography per se. I have been using Pentax cameras with various tele- and wide angle lenses for the past 40 years or so, but I am quite new to digital photography and would have appreciated help on all the settings, capabilities and functions of my new S3.I am sure that with your knowledge and experience you could easily seperate your tips, books, etc. into “photography in general” and “digital photography”? Keep up the good work.
Regards,
Smit (Republic of South Africa)
November 20, 2006 @ 12:19 am

Great tips… I’ve never really been able to get help on the what constitutes basic digital photography techniques before. Your tips have clarified several things that I normally just do and take for granted. Some of the shots I take turn out great but I have never really looked at why. Your tips have given me a reference I can use to hopefully get much more out of the shots I will be taking in the future. A real practical guide to using digital cameras for my money.
November 23, 2006 @ 1:19 pm
Hi David,

Dear David,
Thank you for your wonderful advice.
I have had a small business in photography for a reasonably short time. I apply photo’s to tiles and glass for applications to bathrooms and kitchens and such. I like to use people’s own photo’s, but they can choose any of mine if they wish. Thank you again for being such a blessing.
April 25, 2007 @ 9:00 pm

April 27, 2007 @ 7:58 pm
I appreciate your tips very much. I have a new digital camera that I haven’t explored too much with so far but I took it to my neices school play the other day and I was really far back. My zoom is fantastic- but I coudn’t get the picture to take at first because It had lots of light but my flash didn’t reach that far so it came out dark. I finally figured out how to get the camera in a mode that worked but I went back to my seat to set down and I tried to take the picture but it had motion blur the whole time. Needless to say… I didn’t get any good pictures. I understand I need a tripod but in some cases you can’t just carry a tripod with you everywhere. Is there any tips you can give me for that? Please help it’s pointless to have a camera and not be able to take good shots.
April 30, 2007 @ 3:47 pm

Your tips for amateur and professionals photographers are really very good. Even after read a lot and to photograph plenty there is many simple things that we left or we forgot to practice - it can be the difference.

Thanks for all the help. I have been into photography for many years and have spent thousands of hours and money taking pictures and have had a few pictures used in magazines and news papers. If I had read your tip earlier in life I am sure I would have had many more photos published. Once again Thanks

Just a note: ISO 800 and higher significantly increases niose in pictures. If using a DSLR, try a “faster” lens (aperture of f2.8 - f1.2), but remember that this will decrease your depth of field. Flash can also be used with most cameras; see if you can “bounce” or “diffuse” it, decreasing the harsh shadows (David mentions this elsewhere).
