The Final Dash

by David Peterson 26 comments

June will be the final month of topics for the Photography Dash.

Around a month ago, I made the heartbreaking, but necessary, decision to close the Dash. The number of participants has decreased over recent times - enough that the income no longer covers my fixed costs (like servers and hiring pro photographers). The Dash is now costing me money each month to run.

I know there are some people for whom The Dash is very useful, which makes shutting it down a really hard decision. I certainly haven't taken it lightly, and I am truly personally sorry to be discontinuing The Dash when it is still used by people.

[Update: The DashInsider community will continue. Read to the end of this message]

What's going to happen next?

June's Dash (Recreate This Photo, Animals/Wildlife, and Portrait Lighting) will continue as normal. You'll receive the course content, challenges and critiques as the month progresses.

My system will charge the June payment shortly. Once that happens, I'll cancel your subscription so you won't be charged again.

If you have Dash credits remaining (usually because you purchased multiple months ahead of time), I'll contact you separately to offer you a refund, or alternatively, you can receive previous course content you may have missed.

DashInsider website will continue

The DashInsider website will keep going (only the Dash monthly topics, critiques, and challenges will stop). You will still be able to upload images and communicate with the other great members of the Dash community even after the Dash closes.

All the content is still available

The previous Dash content will still be online - even after the Dash stops - so you can continue to refer back to this valuable information. Find all the links on your Dashboard page.

I'm not leaving!

I will continue teaching photography on my main website . If you haven't already, I recommend signing up for my free weekly newsletter. Each week I send lots of articles to help you improve your photography.

Closing the Dash will also leave me more time to turn my thoughts to some other great ideas I have for teaching photography!

Photography Coaching

If you would like some one-on-one coaching, my three fabulous coaches - Julia, Cameron and Becki - are still here to help you improve. Please contact me if you would like to be put in touch with a coach.

Thanks!

I've been honored to have your support of the Photography Dash over the last few years. Little did I know when I first thought of the Dash (and the Amble) back in 2013 how many photographers would use the information in the course to vastly improve their photography skills (and even win competitions)!

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me by emailing me, or leaving a comment below.

"Keep on Dashing"

David's wonderful photographic courses may be coming to end but the Dash Insider community, that we are all a part of, is going to continue on into the future. A group of dedicated members plan to keep it alive and vibrant, interesting and exciting, with weekly photographic challenges, as suggested by many members who have shared their thoughts and ideas with us in the Forum.

This special world-wide Dash community of ours is too unique to allow it to fall away, after all David's hard work and the dedication of his team. We plan to make it a special place for you all to share your photos, learn new skills and have fun.

Every current and past member of the Dash community is invited to be a part of this exciting new venture. Just log into the Dash Insider HOME page, click on FORUM > News & Announcements > Future of Dash Insider and let us know you will be joining us and then add any ideas or suggestions you might have. We are hoping to see you all back and enjoying your photography with us once again.

I hope to see you very soon on the Dash,

With very best wishes

David, I just wanted to thank you so very much for the Amble, the Dash and the time and commitment you so tirelessly gave. Dashing won't quite be the same. I am forever grateful for the faith you had in me when I had none in myself. I will miss the constant of the dash that has been such a huge part of my life...{ I live miles from anyone...I really have no life! lol} It has been a wonderful ride and looking back at when I first started and where I am now I have you to thank. So thank You and much success in future endeavors. DPS is still my "go to" so am excited for the next chapter. Thanks again Dave and may you always have the perfect light.

Dear David, what a heartbreaking decision this must have been for you. I have enjoyed participating in the dashes over the years and learning so much about photography from you.
i have always enjoyed the comments of the other participants and learning about where they live and the different topography, flora and fauna of their countries. Hopefully we all will continue to post photos and correspond with one another.
I will miss the dash tremendously even though I have not always posted on every challenge, I always read the articles.
I wish you well in all your future endevours.

Just returned from a brief camping trip - and every shot I took had me thinking about past challenges and how I could do things better! David - you created a wonderful vehicle for amateur photography with the Dash - but it is SO much more than that! The community between all the members has grown to be such a close knit one - I count so many Dashers as personal friends now! I am feeling quite bereft at the thought of it all disappearing; but how can I thank you ( and Cameron, Julia and Becki) enough for giving us so much valuable instruction, so many amazing ( and frustrating!!) challenges, and so much fun and interaction... it has been absolutely fantastic. I have just loved being a Dasher! May your future ventures be as successful as this one was - all the very best to you and your family.
With deep appreciation and much love,
    Deb Atkinson

  4. Terri Fulper says:

David, it has been a privilege to have participated in both the Amble and the Dash. I can't tell you how much I have learned from these challenges. It has been fun watching all the 'dashers' grow in their photography...and I must include myself as well.
Although saddened by the closure of the Dash, I am grateful that you will still be teaching, and sending the newsletter.

Please know that I/we want nothing but the best for you now and in the future. You are an awesome teacher, and have made these challenges, well..challenging!

Thank you David, you are an inspiration.

  5. Sylvie Laurent-gelbfarb says:

    Dear David,
So sorry to read your mail David. I am so dismayed.
I can only agree with Cath, George and Angela, David. This is a really heartbreaking piece of news. But, having some business experience, I fully understand that a business must make a profit for it to be viable. I am afraid that now I am not going to take my camera out as often now...
As many of the dear dashers you do have such a great gift for teaching... I just hope that you work out all the difficulties you are going through and I wish you all the best in your future ventures. But again I shall miss you and your team.
    Best wishes
    Sylvie

  6. Vickie Price says:

Well that was a surprise. It stopped me in my tracks. I have been working hard to get all the things done that I have had on my to-do list for 2017 and was so looking forward to getting back into the challenges towards Spring time. David it is sad that you have made this decision, but I understand you have not done it lightly. You have created a wonderful "family" online here and I only hope that we will all continue to post interesting photos and ask for critiques from fellow dashers ... (says she who hasn't participated for several months now). I have certainly learned a lot during my time here, and have really pushed the limits along the way. David I wish you well for your future ventures.

    • Cath Longley says:

Vicki, just to reassure you, we are going to keep the special & unique Dash family and community going, with challenges, learning photographic skills etc., and we hope you will join us. Just log into the Dash Insider pages - go to FORUM - News & Announcements - Future of Dash Insider and read all about our plans for the future. Love it if you would add your own ideas and suggestions too. David started something that is too special to lose now.

  7. Arnold Stark says:

I'm sorry to hear that you are needing to terminate the Dash, but the need is understandable. I have learned a great deal from the Dashes in which I've participated! I'm very happy that the Dash contents will still be available, and that the Dash community will continue. Please be sure to enroll me for the June Dash: animals/wildlife. It's a shame it will be the last!
    Arnold

  8. Sue Fenton says:

I have had the privilege to have discovered David's Amble courses while travelling Australia and stopping in Adelaide for 10 months. I can still remember the excitement and also apprehension as I posted my first photo! I too have learned so much from the courses and the challenges have been something which made me step out of my square and view the world from a completely different perspective.

What fun we have all had along the way and to see the improvement of fellow photographers work has been so heart warming to watch. I have made some wonderful friends along the way.

This would have been a difficult decision for you David and I thank you for bringing The Dash to the world. Thank you too to Julia, Cameron and Becki for your invaluable critiques and to all you wonderful dashers for taking the time to stop by and comment on our photos. A huge thank you to you Cath, your never ending dedication to your fellow Dashers has been incredible, your helpful critiques and your fun end of month Photo Playground challenges have been brilliant! What an amazing ride !! I look forward to seeing what evolves in the future and I am so pleased the past courses will still be available as I have not finished yet :-)

    Sue

  9. Diane Smith says:

I am so sad to learn that the Dash is to end. When I started the Dash I was a complete novice with my first camera but with all David's and the team's help I have progressed so much and hopefully will be able to continue improving and stay in touch with all my new 'friends' in the Dash.

I wish you well David in any new venture you take on and would like to thank you for all the wonderful tips and challenges you set us which often pushed me out of my comfort zone and thereby making me improve my photography.

Thank you and good luck in the future from a very sad dasher.

    Diane

  10. Terry Brown says:

Truly a sad time for so many David. You did an outstanding job of sharing your knowledge with us.
Me, starting to be so different with all the wonderful thoughts and lessons received since we've met. Actually see so much more when I walk the streets. Too bad I don't always carry the camera with me or when I do always have the wrong lens attached. I could give classes on what not to do.
But I do know, so much better than previously, what is no good, what might become something, and what to look for to add to other thoughts. You, the coaches and of course the Dashers have really taught me to see "what could be". Seeing just anything and trying to take a "thought-shot" of it.
Thanks so much David, Becki, Julia and Cameron. A special thanks to all who have taken the time to comment on each others photography. And a special thanks to Cath, the greatest Ambassador ever.
